Foxconn, which said in 2024 it would be first to mass-produce Nvidia's GB200 servers (Taiwan News), already assembles AI servers in Ciudad Juárez (Mexico News Daily). It also said in 2024 it was building the world's largest GB200 plant in Guadalajara (Mexico News Daily). Mexico exported US$82.9B of computer servers in H1 2026 by S&P Global's count, and 93.9% of its server exports went to the US in the 12 months to June (Expansión). In Q2 2026 it supplied nearly 40% of all servers the US imported (Mexico News Daily).

Mexico's high-tech export boom

Computers have passed new cars as Mexico's top export product. They took first place in 2025 (Banco Base), and servers alone reached US$82.9B in the first half of 2026 (Expansión), closing in on the US$92.3B of the whole automotive sector (INEGI). Border states lead computer exports (Banco Base), and 93.9% of Mexico's server exports go to the US (Expansión).

Computers just beat new cars

For about a decade, vehicles were Mexico's top export to the US (Milenio). In 2025, computer equipment passed new cars as the country's top export product (Banco Base). In the first half of 2026, servers alone beat vehicles and auto parts on one narrow count (Mexico Business News), but not INEGI's wider automotive total (INEGI). Server exports grew 210.8% in 2025 and another 172% in the 12 months to June 2026 (S&P Global; Excélsior).

The drivers

Four forces behind the boom

Swipe

Demand

The US AI build-out

Amazon, Alphabet, Meta, Microsoft and SpaceX are forecast to spend US$803–828B on capital investment in 2026, not all of it on AI (Business Insider · HL). OpenAI's Stargate is a separate US$500B project (Epoch AI). In April 2025, Nvidia's enterprise director for Latin America said GB200 systems, mainly for Stargate, were already being produced in Mexico (Expansión).

Supply

Taiwan moved the assembly line

Foxconn invested in Juárez (Mexico News Daily) and said in 2024 it was building the world's largest GB200 plant in Guadalajara (Mexico News Daily). Jalisco's governor put that investment near US$900M in 2025, and Foxconn declined to comment (Bloomberg Línea). Inventec (US$450M) (Mexico News Daily) and Pegatron (US$330M) (Cluster Industrial) have announced Juárez projects, Quanta announced a Nuevo León expansion (Expansión), and Wiwynn is adding capacity in Mexico (Taipei Times). Mexico's imports from Taiwan rose 146% in the 12 months to June 2026 (S&P Global; Expansión).

0.45% vs 10.5%

Tariff math

In 2025, Mexican computer equipment paid an average US tariff of 0.45%, largely thanks to USMCA, against 10.53% for Chinese equivalents (Banco Base). Mexico was the top computer supplier to the US that year, at US$89.9B (Opportimes), though Taiwan had retaken first place by March 2026 (Expansión). On AI servers alone, Mexico passed Taiwan in Q2 2026 (Mexico News Daily).

Logistics

Trucks beat ships

Server racks cross the border by truck (Vanguardia). Tecma, a manufacturing-services firm, says cross-border trucking often takes two to five days, against 20 to 40 days by sea from Asia (Tecma).

The bottom line

What this means for Mexico

Mexico has become the factory floor of America's AI build-out. That brings record exports and investment, but most of the value is still created elsewhere. The next few years decide whether Mexico only assembles the hardware or also supplies, powers and designs it.

Growth

A new export engine

Computer equipment passed new cars as Mexico's top export product in 2025 (Banco Base), and total exports are on track for a record US$835B in 2026 (ECLAC · El CEO).

Jobs

More money than jobs

Electronics plants in the IMMEX program, a category that includes computers, communications and measuring equipment, added 26,004 jobs in the year to May 2026, reaching a record 410,095 workers (INEGI · El CEO). On a separate count, computer-equipment jobs rose 3.84% in 2025 while exports rose 144.81% (Banco Base). Reporting points to highly automated plants (Vanguardia); Banco Base points to plants near capacity and an assembly role (Banco Base).

Value

Most of the value is made abroad

About 70.7% of the value of Mexico's tech and electronics exports is generated abroad, according to UNCTAD (Expansión). Taiwan is the largest source of the industry's imported inputs, at 44.1%, mainly parts, processors and memory (Expansión). Every part made locally could keep more of that money in Mexico.

Trade rules

A trade deal on a yearly lease

On July 1, 2026, Economy Secretary Marcelo Ebrard said the US was not in a position to extend USMCA for 16 years. The treaty moves to annual reviews, with validity guaranteed through 2036 (Infobae).

Where the opportunity is

Six ways to build on the boom

The best openings are in what the assembly plants need and still can't buy in Mexico.

Swipe

Local suppliers

Mexico imported US$28.4B of servers from Taiwan in H1 2026 alone, more than the US$15.1B of all 2025 (S&P Global; Expansión). Chips are likely to stay imported, but the racks, metalwork, cables and packaging around them are contracts a Mexican supplier could win.

Power and energy

Mexico Energy Partners, a consultancy that advises on these fixes, estimates that close to 70% of the 103 industrial parks under construction (Expansión) won't reach full contracted power before 2028 (Mexico Energy Partners). With transmission lines near capacity (Amperon), parks can turn to their own substations and on-site generation or storage (Mexico Energy Partners).

Data centers in Mexico

CloudHQ is investing US$4.8B in six data centers in Querétaro (Mexico News Daily). Building, cooling, powering and running them is a new market of its own.

Robotics and automation

About 40,000 industrial robots already work in Mexico, and the advanced-manufacturing sector imports roughly US$34B a year (trade.gov). We see openings in integration, cobots and maintenance.

Technical talent

IMMEX electronics plants employ a record 410,095 people (INEGI · El CEO). In Nuevo León, business groups report more than 40,000 unfilled technical jobs, including mechatronics and maintenance (ADN40). We see room for training academies and specialized staffing.

Industrial space and logistics

Plants, warehouses, customs and cross-border trucking. At least 71% of 2025 computer exports came from border states (our sum), and 67% went to Texas (Banco Base). With 93.9% of server exports headed to the US (Expansión), speed at the border matters.

Spotlight: five ways into automation

Systems integration

Design, program and maintain robotic cells. Mexico installed 5,868 industrial robots in 2023 (trade.gov).

Supply the server plants

Thermal management, power distribution, racks and structured cabling. The buyers already operate in Juárez (Mexico News Daily) and Monterrey (Expansión), and Foxconn announced a Guadalajara plant in 2024 (Mexico News Daily).

Cobots for mid-size factories

Sell, lease and integrate collaborative robots, which are expected to see higher demand over the next five years (trade.gov).

Talent & training

Mechatronics academies and industrial-software bootcamps. Nuevo León's business groups report more than 40,000 unfilled technical jobs (ADN40), and the Talento Mexicano initiative aims to expand training in automation and robotics (trade.gov).

Service the installed base

Maintenance contracts, machine-vision quality control and predictive software for the estimated 40,000 robots already in use (trade.gov).

Tailwinds: Plan México's immediate deduction on fixed assets and its training incentives (Cuatrecasas), temporary imports of machinery under IMMEX (Garrigues), and a humanoid-robot project announced for Nuevo León in February 2026, Reflex Robotics' first Latin American site (El Universal).
